EVENT REPORT 00-06: WHAT A START!
NOTES:With the May 21st "Demo Race" over, we had to get the car back to the set-up that worked so well on Practice Day May13th. Uncle Don did his best to get the gearing, tires, and suspension to where it had been that day. In practice the car seemed a bit tight, so we made a small change in tire pressures, hoping to loosen it up a bit. In Senior Heat #1 we started 6th on the grid. We got a great start right from the green flag and quickly moved to third place by the end of the first lap. We then managed to pass #77 low, and on the last turn of the last lap we got by #22 to take the win! That meant we had to start the Feature in 8th place, with lots of traffic ahead. Again we got a good jump and moved through the field, ending up 3rd after the first lap. We settled in behind defending champion Kyle Bergsma (#76) for a few laps. When he got a bit off line we got by and moved in on the leader (#31). We stayed right on his bumper for about 10 or 12 laps. We watched for an opening, and on the last turn of the last lap he got just a bit high coming out of the turn. It was our last chance. We pounced, passing him low and taking the checkered flag! Our first Feature win (ever) !!
Unfortunately Dad was not able to see it since he was in working in Ottawa. Thanks to Mom for filling in for Dad. Perhaps she’s a good luck charm (or Dad should stay away on race night). Anyway, what a great start to the season! We’ll have to wait 2 weeks to get back on the track since we must attend the IODE Canadian History Awards presentation on June 7th. School is important, and it’s a nice honour to get the award but racing like this is a lot of fun. Perhaps it will rain on the 7th and we won’t miss any racing (and the points).
